Paris fire brigade circa 1920

The standard French term for firemen - sapeurs-pompiers - translates literally as sapper-pumpers. The Paris brigade was created by an imperial decree of Napoleon 1st on 18 September 1811, which assigned this mission to a military body, le Bataillon de sapeurs-pompiers de Paris.
