transport etymology 11 - hull

The body of a ship. Ultimately the word, including the meaning of the dry outer covering of a fruit, seed, or nut, comes from Proto-Germanic hulus "to cover" (Old High German hulla, hulsa; modern German Hülle, Hülse, Dutch huls).
